• My wife was handed a note as she was getting off the Sunday Tlacolulu bus near the baseball field that read: “Go back to your f…ing country. We hate you.” We had sat quietly on the bus for the entire trip from Tlacolulu back to Oaxaca.
• There is graffiti at a prominent Reforma intersection (Porfirio Diaz & Belisario Dominguez) that reads very clearly in English “GRINGO YOU ARE A PLAGUE”. The message... Go away! Why has this message remained so long on this very visible wall?
• Some business transactions have failed to provide change… simply keeping our money as a tip.
• On 9Feb (my wife’s birthday) we went to Marisqueria El Patron in Reforma for a birthday meal. She was provided a free flan dessert without questions being asked when we told the waitress it was her birthday. On 24 Feb (my birthday) we went again to El Patron because of the good experience on 9Feb. My wife told the waitress it was my birthday, but she refused to honor the request because I did not have proof it was my birthday. Why are there two sets of rules for this at El Patron?
Oaxaca has been a welcoming community in the past. Our impression is that many locals no longer wish to have folks like us visiting their beautiful culture and community.
