The building was constructed in 1897 after the demolition of the Palais d'Industrie. The building follows the Beaux-Arts style from the eponymous great school of architecture in Paris.
During World War I, the site was used as a military hospital. The Grand Palais was used for military purposes again during World War II by the Germans as a warehouse for trucks.
