I love the Cafe Royal, it used to be one of our go-to places when we were in the City Centre. For some reason some bright spark has decided to play loud, thumping music at an ear-splitting level, making conversation almost impossible. This wonderful Edinburgh institution is in grave danger of becoming just another noisy pub with zero atmosphere. Such a shame!

I visited w/c 1/4/24. While the food was OK, the service was pretty poor. Everything seemed to be manyana. I had to clear my own table. The server cleared some glasses then left other things on the table as he moved on to serving another table. When I asked if it was bar or table service the barman said "its up to you". The attitude just seemed a bit off. Newer venues are opening up locally and if the Cafe Royal keeps this level of service they will surely lose repeat business. A shame!

Google said it was dog friendly. Went in , ordered drinks and promptly told to leave as not dog friendly ????We were cold and tired. Dog asleep under the table. IF YOU HAVE A DOG DONT GO. Looked an amazing pub. Would have l9ved to have stayed as would have been exactly our type of place. Disappointed ????

Very over priced for slightly better than average food. Our waitress was a bit disinterested and could have been a bit more engaging. Oysters were not good and very small. Venison was great but pomme Anna was disappointing.

Great pub just around the corner from Motel One.
The bar is very traditional with seating around the pub. It was very busy for an early Friday afternoon but most pubs in Edinburgh are.
Service was quick and very friendly, no music in the bar just lots of voices chatting away but it had a good atmosphere and it attracts an older crowd.
Highly recommended!

The food is excellent, and there's a great atmosphere.

Service could be better though, bit of a wait for our reservation and the waiter was over familiar and frankly cheeky.

Awful service , awful bar.

Waiters are clueless , they serve food right next to where you eat this is a basic Weatherspoons at best !!

Do not go if you appreciate good service and good atmosphere .

Big classic famous bar. Very classy and at the same time down to earth. Bit of an Edinburgh institution. Had not been in for a few years so I was happy to find it hadn't lost its buzz and vibe.

Very popular bar and restaurant with separate Oyster Bar. Lots of wonderful architecture and tiled murals. Very good menu and a great selection of Whisky and Ale's. Well known for their Bloody Mary's. . Outside and upstairs is part of the building and is known as the Voodoo lounge. Worth a visit. During the Evening.

The place to be !!!
Vraiment un cadre à voir quand on déambule dans Édimbourg. Ce pub est typique les gens y sont charmants, et de plus lorsque l'on est Français, nous sommes très bien accueillis.Les prix un peu élevés mais corrects.
