There are luxury hotels, and then there's Hotel du Cap‑Eden‑Roc—an opulent seaside relic where the only thing older than the chandeliers is the entitlement they show to returning guests. At $5,000 a night, you don’t expect to be treated like royalty; you expect to be treated like a human. Instead, we were met with the scent of industrial paint wafting through the room like a cursed aromatherapy experiment, and service so comically rude it bordered on performance art.
We had the distinct displeasure of returning food not once, but twice—once at breakfast, and again at lunch. Perhaps the chef was also blinded by the paint fumes. To their credit, the one-star Michelin restaurant wasn’t bad when they got it right—but it’s hard to savor the foie gras when you’re also digesting pure disdain from the staff.
The real pièce de résistance? The service. A security guard took it upon himself to get confrontational, and when I raised the issue, the manager responded not with an apology, but with his now-legendary refrain: “Well, some guests have been coming here for 40 years.” Ah, yes—nothing says “we value your experience” quite like being told you're not a priority because you didn't summer here during the Reagan administration.
Every complaint was met with the same patronizing shrug: “There are people who’ve been here longer.” As if the hotel runs on seniority, not service. No remorse, no recognition—just a smug loyalty to the ghosts of summers past.
Beautiful property? Yes. But like a Monet, best admired from afar—because up close, it’s a mess of chaos, fumes, and cold eggs. Spend your $5,000 elsewhere—preferably somewhere that doesn't have a caste system based on reservation anniversaries.
