I gave you only one star not because you applied the cancellation policy for the booking (because it is totally fine), but because of your attitude.
You wrote "If you had arrived at the hotel and had not found your room booked, you would certainly have been very angry." So you blame the customer being a liar. If someone says that he/she won't be able to come to your hotel because of health problems, why do you think "what if he/she comes"?
You absolutely have right to apply the late cancellation penalty, that is not the problem. But your lame excuse is unnecessary, bad mannered and insulting, that is the problem.

Uno hotel che mi ha sorpreso per i dettagli: l'acqua gratuita microfiltrata, il calcetto gratuito per finire la serata, l'aiuto nella scelta del parcheggio, la colazione decisamente varia, abbondante e di buona qualità. Consigliatissimo.
I hope Mr. Zeno soon understands that everything is not about “money”.

I would like to make it "one more time" clear that I have given to you only one star not because you applied the cancellation policy for the booking (which is perfectly fine an understandable as I have already agreed to pay), but because of your attitude in your e-mail.
I do hope you would change the manner to respond to your customers after 34 years of experience.
