Hyatt's acquisition of Alila's parent company in 2018 was one of the best things to have happened to the WoH program. Alila has a design language that is very unique and they must be one of the few luxury brands who are able to seamlessly merge this design language across their properties in various locations. Alila Ubud started its life as a Chedi and is more than 20 years old now. The property showed its age, but I would argue that even during the regular seasons its rates were quite reasonable compared to other properties of the area.||I booked for a Deluxe Room via a Hyatt Prive rate, which gives a very good deal if you don't have elite status with Hyatt. The rate included breakfast for two. The amenity was 60 minutes massage for a couple. As we were celebrating our belated 10th anniversary I also contacted the general manager Bagus Jelantik before our stay. My email was replied by Nova, the host manager, who kindly upgraded us to their Pool Villa.||The airport at Denpasar is always crowded and our flight from Singapore arrived late. We had pre-purchased a hotel drop off via Klook (the most optimal option I think) and the driver was waiting at the Klook lounge located outside the luggage area. The journey to Alila Ubud took 1 hours and 40 minutes and when we reached it was almost the regular check-in hour of 3 PM. Welcome drinks and cold towels were served. Unfortunately, our room was still not ready while the executive who was checking us in initially thought we had a Valley Villa (a category below Pool Villa). Alila Ubud charged the credit card for the entire stay right during the check-in. As the room was not ready we went down to the pool level where complimentary refreshments were served each day during that hour. The food included a platter of three snack items (one of them fried), mostly sweet in taste and a regular non-alcoholic beverage. While it was much appreciated to have this, it was nothing special either and we ended up missing it on the next day.||Our pool villa was located quite a bit away from the reception area beyond a significant flight of stairs which required us to climb up. The whole resort was actually perched atop a cliff looking into the Ayung river while the design resembled the nearby rice terraces with most building materials sourced locally. Our Pool Villa #403 was the second highest located, just below #503. The pool itself was rather large (and deep) which along with a couple of daybeds occupied almost the entire length of the villa. On the other side there was this fish pond with water lilies that spanned up to the villa boundary wall. The outdoor bathtub was located partially inside this pond, accessible from inside the villa. Although looked appealing, one day we found a big lizard resting inside it and so decided against its use. The room itself was quite large decorated by the signature wooden panels of Alila, blended with the locally-inspired Balinese thatched roof (the inside was wooden framed) and stone flooring. The central piece of the room was this rather comfortable canopied bed coupled with a rather spacious daybed. There was a working desk behind the bed, a round dining table with two chairs, a TV and then a minibar with a Nespresso machine. Glass windows were on two sides of the room with horizontal fabric blinds which were operated manually. The bath area had separate his and her sides with washbasins, open cabinets and integrated luggage racks. Further down, the bathroom and the toilet had their separate rooms on either sides. There was enough daylight filtering through all the windows and glass doors. The split ACs (one each in bedroom and the dressing area) were not strong enough, especially the one inside the bedroom.||Our villa room might have looked dated but it was quite well preserved, perhaps that's the way it was designed. One oddity was the old school key to enter the room which was easy to misplace and we did once lock ourselves out! The housekeeping staff left much to be desired. Firstly, it was quite difficult to communicate with them. Secondly, their work was not up to the prevailing local high standards. Thirdly, they often did odd things. For example, our welcome amenity was three cupcakes of different types. We tried one and decided to try the rest later. The next day they promptly removed them during the housekeeping service without even asking us. We availed our 60 minutes massage on the second day by availing the Balinese massage at the spa located near the reception. We found the experience to be rather disappointing and the whole process was a bit rushed.||The property shined in its F&B though. The Plantation restaurant located a level below the reception was where we had our breakfasts and one dinner. The breakfast was a-la-carte from a menu that changed every day. This was easily the best breakfast we had in a long time. The local options were outstanding be it noodles (mie bihun), yellow rice dish (nasi kuning) or the rice porridges (bubur ayam & bubur manado). The egg preparations were not too behind either as were the drinks and other breakfast beverages that we tried. The service was always with a smile and did not seem rushed. We also had dinner once. After being seated we were welcomed with these yum shrimp crackers that we actually asked for a repeat serving. For the soup we went with the kuah udang manis, the sweet corn soup with poached prawns and had the mixed sate which was really flavourful. For the mains we went for the battered fish (ikan goreng) and the pork shoulder (babi kecap). Finally, we ended the meal with the pisang goreng, the banana fritter served with icecream. Each of the items were nicely prepared, elegantly plated and above tasted very good. The costs were reasonable too.||The hotel also did a free photo session for us. With stunning views all around it was not difficult to find a good spot. The infinity pool and the cliff behind were the most popular spots but we chose the jungle view from the upper steps as our background. It came out very nice, something to be framed.
