CHATEAU DU MAX

Nous sommes venus pour l'escape game. Complètement novices, nous avons adoré.L'accueil est très sympathique et l'escape game est très chouette, tout ça dans un cadre magnifique. Je recommande.

Superbe et dynamique, le château propose nombre d'activités variées et intéressantes, un lieu à voir.

Très beau château, hôte très sympathique, repas fait maison. Lieu à découvrir, même pour les enfants avec cette très bonne idée de jeux. Chambres très bien. Très contente d'avoir découvert ce château qui est à quelques km de chez moi.

Quelle joie de découvrir des pépites comme ce château au cœur de l’Allier ! Un accueil chaleureux et un endroit magnifique où j’ai eu la chance de me produire. Le propriétaire met toute son énergie pour satisfaire ses visiteurs en faisant de son château un lieu d’animation hors du temps. Une visite s’impose !

We have stayed with Dominique 2 times in the past and this is a review of our latest stay, the 3rd time we have stayed at Château Du Max. As with our previous stays we had pre booked our evening meal many weeks in advance when we arranged our visit. We drive to Spain and stop over in France to break up the journey and experience French hospitality. This is one of the reasons we book our evening meal as well as it is a tiring and long journey.
We communicate using Google translate and email as Dominique does not speak much English and my GCSE French is a little rusty but I get the basics. I had emailed ahead several times to let her know our time of arrival, she needs this to plan the evening meal. On this occasion we decided to drive overnight to arrive before 12pm.
We got to the Chateau earlier than anticipated around mid morning and our room wasn't ready, which was fine. So we decided to find a local patisserie and went back as requested an hour or so later. When we got back the room was ready, however Dominique advised us that she was unable to provide us with the evening meal we had pre booked because she had a large party in the previous day. We had to ask her for advice about where we could find somewhere else to eat, there's no welcome pack to let you know what is available locally. She advised a village 20 minutes away. The château is quite remote so we had to drive, and were fortunate to find a bistro open who could accommodate at late notice. The breakfast is pared back compared to our previous visits, very basic offering of bread, a croissant and yoghurt. The room was hot, the toilet smelled of urine, the shower was in a very small cubicle in to the sleeping area down stairs where our teenage children were, so not much privacy.
Sadly this experience has been very disappointing overall. To be let down at the very last moment for the evening meal really marred the whole stay, we felt like an inconvenience rather than a valued returning customer. Needless to say we won't be returning. The château it self is full of French charm but there are many others available, the hosting let things down this time. You overlook the dated decor and cobwebs when the hosting is good. Since we last stayed pre covid the château has diversified offering escape room and murder mystery experiences, which makes me wonder if the B&B side of the business is no longer a priority.
