I recently dined at ALLORA restaurant in Arles, January 2024. While the charming interior initially set high expectations, the dining experience itself proved to be a major disappointment.
Let’s start with the wine list—it was totally overpriced. Although the waiter was polite, he immediately recommended the most expensive bottles on the menu, which made the experience feel overly profit-driven. I settled on a €50 bottle, one of the more affordable options, but many others were priced between €90 and €130. It left me questioning whether the restaurant aims to be a high-end wine bar or simply an Italian eatery.
The food was an even bigger disappointment. Several menu items were unavailable, which was both frustrating and limiting. The appetizer—a trio of ravioli stuffed with porcini mushrooms—was bland and underseasoned, far from the rich, flavorful experience one expects from Italian cuisine. The main course, a kind of steak sliced into pieces, was tough and unreasonably difficult to chew. To make matters worse, the side dish featured plain boiled potatoes, lightly fried in oil yet completely lacking any seasoning. (I’ve included a photo for reference.)
I couldn’t even finish my meal, leaving the place both hungry and frustrated. As someone who appreciates authentic soul-made Italian food, this was a really disappointing experience. The tasteless dishes, combined with small portions, made my dinner out completely unjustified.
If you’re not prepared to spend €50-130 just on a bottle of wine to accompany a tasteless meal, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
I was a bit disappointed with the food. The starters were good with a ravioli and a scallop & truffle carpaccio. But the mains fell short. The gnocchi was VERY rich to the point one to two forkfuls would get you full. The scallop & mushroom flavor lacked flavor. The only good one was the beef ravioli.
