I attended the tour of Les Halles, the center of food culture in Paris. Our guide was excellent: she brought along fresh baguettes (both the usual type and the more restrictive classic type) so that we could sample various food products during the tour. We began at E. Dehillerin, the oldest store for cooking tools, known for its copper pieces. From there, we saw several more cooking tool stores, then on the the food!
We enjoyed a duck liver pate and smoked duck breast at a Foie Gras shop; several cheeses from a fromagerie; salumi from a charcuterie/butcher shop; and of course pastries from the oldest patisserie in Paris. We also toured the Cathedral of St. Eustache (who knew there was a St. Eustache?).
At the end of the tour, we enjoyed Sancerre and coffees at a local cafe and talked about what we had just seen and tasted. The guide was passionate about the places and foods we saw and sampled, and this made the tour both interesting and fun.
I also took a macaron class. I live at high altitude, and macaron perfection has already eluded me. Our instructor used simple, clear and informative language, and was as patient as a saint! Our class included both novices to baking and "old hands". I never felt overwhelmed, nor did I feel that the class was oversimplified. It was extremely enlightening to me, so much so that I have already successfully made macaron at home!
Thank you, La Cuisine Paris, for making my experience in Paris a wonderful one.
