Ce n'était pas une expérience agréable, car, malgré la notification préalable du restaurant, une folle nous a attaqués, ainsi que le (petit) chien, avec une violence indicible, en hurlant qu'il devait rester immobile. Mais le chien était immobile ; s'il n'était même pas censé respirer, soyez plus poli et dites que vous n'acceptez pas les chiens.

Un accueil indigne. Donc, les 5 pour la nourriture sont sur parole. Nous nous sommes levés et sommes partis, tandis qu'elle continuait à forcer le pauvre chiot à rester immobile. On ne peut pas dîner comme ça. À tel point que, de la table d'en face, on lui a demandé de se calmer. Une honte indicible.

This was our first evening in Tours, marking the beginning of what we hoped would be a memorable journey through the Loire Valley. As a group of non-European visitors with limited experience in France, we were drawn here because of the Michelin guide and high Google ratings. Unfortunately, our experience turned out to be a complete disappointment, across food, service, and atmosphere. We left not only hungry, but more importantly, feeling unwelcome and unsafe.

Food: The portions were small (which we understand may be typical in France), and while I personally enjoyed the snail risotto starter, some of my friends found the snails fishy and not fresh. For mains, we ordered cod and veal. Sadly, both were overwhelmingly salty. The veal, though plated in a ‘fine-dining’ style, was dry and too salty, its presentation resembles a British Sunday Roast, but at a third of the portion size and without the hearty taste. The potatoes were passable but tasted like something from a UK university dining hall. The cod dish, which could have been a good pairing of creaminess and citrus, was similarly ruined by to much salt. In the end, we joked amongst ourselves that we would have preferred fish and chips or a British pub Sunday roast. We ended up going to McDonald’s across the alley right after.

Service: The service was among the worst we’ve experienced. The waitress appeared impatient and condescending when we attempted to speak in basic French, and her attitude suggested annoyance with our lack of fluency. The menu was entirely in French, and with no WiFi and poor signal, it took us a while to translate. We absolutely did not expect an English menu, but a little patience from staff would have been much appreciated. Some of us didn’t finish our meals due to the taste, and this again drew disapproving looks from the waitress, as if not finishing the food was a personal offence.

Atmosphere: The restaurant had a tense, unwelcoming vibe. The waitress carried on conversations with other (French) guests while delivering our plates, and the overall tone of the place felt rigid and disciplinary. Despite keeping our voices low and being respectful, we received gazes from others. It felt as if we were being judged or gossiped about, and the dynamic left us deeply uncomfortable. As anthropologists, we couldn’t help but reflect on the subtle power dynamics at play: this was an unexpectedly Foucaultian experience of surveillance, discipline, and subjectivity.

In summary:
AVOID AT ALL COST, especially non-European, visitors to avoid this restaurant. This was more than a bad meal, but above all a very much deeply saddened encounter. Our first night in France should have been nice; instead, it left us feeling othered and disappointed.

Un des meilleurs repas que nous ayons fait depuis longtemps ! Et un rapport qualité-prix impeccable. Service super attentionné, je recommande vivement.

Excellente experience. Accueil impeccable et des plats délicieux, préparés par un chef passionné et généreux qui aime partager. Super sympa. Je recommande de réserver.

★★★★★ – Une très belle surprise !

Au départ un peu sceptique en raison de l’emplacement très touristique dans le Vieux Tours, je craignais de tomber sur un attrape-touristes… mais quelle agréable surprise ! La carte met en avant des produits locaux, avec un choix limité mais bien pensé pour satisfaire tous les goûts — ce qui est plutôt rassurant. J’ai particulièrement apprécié l’échange avec la patronne, seule en salle : malgré l’affluence, elle prend le temps de conseiller chaque client avec attention et bienveillance. Un très bon moment passé ici. À refaire sans hésiter !

Slow, unfriendly service. Food ok but below expectations.

The restaurant is at a busy location with lots of bars and other restaurants nearby. It is however much smaller and less busy than those other places nearby, which makes for a calmer, more refined appearance.

It is run by a couple. The woman serves on the tables, the man cooks. Unfortunately, the service experience is a letdown. They have a dozen tables and the woman does not manage to cater to all of them despite rushing from one table to the next. As a consequence, she seems very stressed, curt in her interactions and generally not very inviting. In our case, we had to wait 20 minutes until we were even given the menu and then wait 30 -40 minutes between courses. In between, difficult to get the waiters attention to get more water or anything else.

The food looks very nice on the plate but it was not as good as the looks might suggest. The salmon and lentils starter was a bit bland and the cod main course was too salty.

La cuisine est très bonne mais la patronne est infâme.
Arrogante, critique envers certains clients, elle rend l’ambiance très mauvaise.
On m’avait prévenu, j’ai quand même voulu y aller pour la cuisine mais sincèrement l’habitude de la patronne m’incite à vous conseiller de fuir ce restaurant, on mange tout aussi bien dans bien d’autres restaurants à Tours, avec une vraie qualité de service et dans une bien bien meilleure ambiance.

Atmosphere: Calm and cozy.
Service: The staff were friendly and gave the place a nice local feel.
Food/Product Quality: The foie gras appetizer was absolutely amazing! The lamb I had for the main course was prepared in three different ways, which made for a fun and thoughtful dining experience.
Portion & Pace: I also appreciated that the portions weren’t too large, and that there was a simple course option available. It allowed us to enjoy a relaxed meal in about two hours, which was perfect.
Price Range: Reasonably priced and great value for the quality.
Would I Return?: When I come back to Tours, I’ll definitely go back!

Une très belle table à découvrir. Cuissons au top et plat copieux sur la formule du midi avec aux 1 entrée, 2 plats viande ou poissons et fromage ou dessert à 24€. Accueil chaleureux. Un duo gagnant. ????

Super restaurant !

La Rissole à Tours est une belle découverte. Les plats sont travaillés, savoureux et originaux, avec une vraie recherche dans les associations de saveurs. Une excellente adresse pour les amateurs de cuisine raffinée !

Un excellent restaurant MAIS…un accueil déplorable!
La carte est appétissante et les plats sont excellents, toutefois l’accueil de la patronne est des plus surprenants…A chaque question posée, on a le droit à une réponse pleine d’agressivité et totalement déplacée comme par exemple: « est-ce que vous pourriez nous en dire un peu plus sur le râpé de truffe svp? » et bien on nous répond « c’est écrit sur la carte, je ne vois comment on peut être plus clair », ambiance….
Ensuite, lorsque l’on souhaite tester la spécialité tourangelle qu’est la Beuchelle, on doit limite supplier car on a le droit à « vous savez ce que c’est ? » « c’est moitié ris de veau / rognons » « vous êtes sûr car je ne pourrais pas renvoyer votre plat » « vous êtes sur ? Au risque de ne pas manger »! J’ai cru rêvé et surtout du répéter, pour la seconde fois, la troisième fois, la quatrième fois! Bref un sketch !
Nous n’y retournerons certainement pas car les 60€/personne les valent mais certainement pas avec cet accueil.

We were so excited to come here for a birthday dinner of a close friend. When we arrived, it was peaceful and a nice environment but the service was slow, the server/owner was disagreeable and it was clear many other customers felt the same way. We were disappointed with the service and the food was mixed (my scallops were great but my friends’ guinea fowl was very dry). It is not okay to be so cold and disagreeable.

Mon mari et moi tenions à vous remercier pour votre accueil. Le fait maison prend tout son sens avec vos plats. De l’entrée au dessert un vrai délice. Nous conseillons sans hésitation ce restaurant. Merci Guillaume et Laetitia au plaisir de vous revoir

Super, une belle découverte

Wonderful! Highly recommend. What an amazing gem of a restaurant. Delicious flavors. The best entree/starter I’ve had in all of Loire (including Michelin star restaurants). The beef tataki was genuinely one of the best things I’ve eaten but every single course was lovely. The woman helping was so kind (even though we speak little to no French) and selected two wonderful wines for us to enjoy through our meal. Cannot recommend highly enough. So glad we chose this for dinner while in Tours!

This place is amazing. At first we were a bit hesitant but the food, service and wine made up for any hesitation.

We had the beef tataki & tomato salad which were exceptional. The beef with the mayonnaise was amazing.

We also had the homard gnocchi for main and that was INCREDIBLE. They were generous with the portion of lobster and the sauce was to die for.

We finished off with both desert and they did not disappoint at all.

Try and be surprised at how at this price point you get a nearly Michelin quality in food.

J’ai dîné ce soir avec mon conjoint à la Rissole. Si l’on y mange très bien, dans un cadre élégant, j’ai trouvé l’accueil brutal et indélicat. Enceinte de 7 mois, j’ai dû demander des précisions sur la carte pour éviter les aliments interdits pendant la grossesse. Mes questions ont été accueillies avec mépris et petites moqueries de la part de la serveuse / patronne. Cela a gâché mon expérience du repas.

Très bon plats, le décor et le mobilier sont absolument ravissants, un des plus beaux intérieurs que j’aie pu voir dans un restaurant. A bientôt avec plaisir lors de mon prochain passage à Tours.
