Was bleibt wirklich in Erinnerung von dieser Unterkunft? Schattig-kühle Zimmer, Sonnenuntergänge, ein Wassersparkonzept, gute Gespräche mit einigen anderen Gästen? Ja, ein wenig schon. Es überwiegt aber das Gefühl, an einem Ort Zeit verbracht zu haben, wo du als Gast nicht willkommen bist, wie sonst üblich auf Santo Antao. Keine echte Herzlichkeit oder Gastfreundschaft, die ich überall sonst erlebt hatte. Die Besitzer beziehungsweise Verwalter egoistisch und mit sich selbst beschäftigt, wenn man etwas wissen will. Das einheimische Personal ungewohnt desinteressiert, kein Lächeln, merkwürdig apathisch. Frühstück für diesen Preis äußerst karg, einfach und billig. Alles scheint abgezählt. Oft wird nach 30 Minuten Abendessen sofort abgeräumt, ein schneller Alibi-Grogue wird noch gereicht. Buffet auf einer Mauer, wo alle von der Straße draufschauen können - das geht gar nicht. Auf Hausregeln wird streng hingewiesen, aber die Zimmer werden auch nach 2 Tagen nicht gereinigt. Es scheint, dass die Besitzer wegen ihrer tollen Lage und fehlenden Alternativen in Tarrafal so agieren können. Schade. Ich hatte Santo Antão 2 Wochen lang ganz anders erlebt und halte das wahre Santo Antão auch in guter Erinnerung.

Emplacement très chouette a l'entrée de Tarrafal. Apéro le soir au coucher du soleil sur le grand patio très sympa. Les Chambres sont correctes mais il fait chaud. Le repas est un buffet plutôt complet mais plus cher que la majorité des restaurants de l'île. Nous avons aussi trouvé l'accueil plutôt impersonnel. Et pour le départ a 6h du matin au retour on a eu un mini sandwich pas reluisant a emporter. Mais Tarrafal reste un paradis pour qui aime la tranquilité et l'atmosphère sans pareille d'un authentique village de pêcheurs Cap verdien.

Commençons par le meilleur : il faut venir à Tarrafal, qui donne une impression du bout du monde à une heure de Porto Novo. Et la situation de Mare tranquilidade dans le village est idéale, à deux pas de la mer, de la plage et du point d'arrivée des pêcheurs. Les infrastructures ont beaucoup d'atouts : la terrasse, les grands arbres, la disposition des chambres. Il y a cependant de nombreuses déceptions : nous avions deux chambres avec salle de bain, l'une avec de l'eau à volonté (à peine tiède cependant), l'autre avec un très mince filet d'eau. "C'est normal, nous dit Suzi, la cuve est moins haute". Oui, mais alors : pourquoi ne pas améliorer le système, ou faire payer un prix moins élevé ?Belles terrasses à côté des chambres mais pas de canapés pour s'y installer, juste quelques coussins sur des bancs. L'équipement des chambres est d'ailleurs réduit au plus simple. Le repas du soir se compose d'un buffet, c'est correct mais les cuisinières ne font guère d'effort. En dehors du thon et du poulet au barbecue, point de salut ! Certains dirons que c'est à ce prix (un peu élevé d'ailleurs) qu'il fait venir à Tarrafal...

Au bout de l'île de santo antao Tarafal est un petit paradis et Mar Tanquilidade est le lieu idéal pour en profiter.

The rooms are clean and spacious, if basic. The grounds are lovely, and the location (Tarrafal) is excellent if you want to do nothing but swim in the sea and sunbathe. The food is decent. There are not a lot of places to eat in Tarrafal, so this is fairly important.
The hosts, Frank and Susi, are awkward, both in conversation - the first thing they told us when we arrived was that they had googled our names - and in accommodation; one evening we got back half an hour after dinner had finished, but before the plates had been cleared away, we asked if they had anything at all that we could eat, bread, rice, etc, and they told us there was not. There have been a lot of harsh assessments of their characters so I will offer a slightly more forgiving perspective. They seem unhappy. The Cabo Verdean staff, who cook and clean, are lovely.
Overall it is not such a bad place to stay, especially in Tarrafal. We didn't have any of the issues other people have had over pay - I felt that Susi was quite scrupulous in her calculation.

Other notes:
- The WiFi is quite good if you get the room where the router is. Otherwise you need to go to an outdoor courtyard to access it.
- There is no hot water
- If you go to Tarrafal make sure to get at least one boat ride with the local fisherman - they will stop by every other boat they see to load or offload people, fish, equipment. It's a lot of fun.
